Ben Wang, April 12 hearing, recently noticed that many women in their thirties and older are experiencing discomfort while walking long distances. They have visited Beijing Friendship Hospital for evaluation, and the diagnosis was hallux valgus.
Hallux valgus, commonly known as "bunion," is a foot deformity where the big toe angles outward more than 15 degrees from its normal position. The primary symptoms include a bony bump on the inside of the big toe, pain at the site, swelling, skin irritation, and even ulcers in severe cases. In advanced stages, the tendons and plantar fascia can become stiff and painful, making it difficult to wear shoes and walk comfortably.
According to Professor Lu Ying, an expert in foot and ankle surgery at Beijing Friendship Hospital, hallux valgus is more common in adult women and often occurs bilaterally. It can be caused by genetic factors—children of parents with bunions are more likely to develop them—as well as acquired factors such as wearing pointed or high-heeled shoes, or changes in gait over time. As the condition worsens, it can lead to complications like bunion cysts, hammertoes, and metatarsalgia, which can affect the appearance and function of the foot. In some cases, it may even cause knee, hip, or lower back pain, significantly impacting daily life.
The goal of treatment is to restore the foot’s natural structure and function. Simply removing the bony protrusion offers no real benefit. Instead, a comprehensive analysis of the underlying pathology is needed, considering the overall condition of the foot and lower limbs. Correcting the deformity and addressing the root cause is essential for effective treatment. Mild cases can be managed through massage, strengthening exercises, and orthotics. If these methods don’t work, surgery is often the most effective option. Minimally invasive procedures are now widely used to correct imbalances in the foot, restoring normal biomechanics and shock absorption. These surgeries involve small incisions, less trauma, reduced pain, faster recovery, and a lower recurrence rate, offering excellent results for patients suffering from bunions.
Prevention plays a key role in avoiding or delaying the onset of hallux valgus. Here are some practical tips:
1. Maintain a balanced lifestyle with proper rest and avoid standing or walking for extended periods. Keep a correct walking posture.
2. Practice good foot hygiene by washing your feet daily with warm water to promote circulation and reduce inflammation.
3. Use insoles if you're prone to flat feet to help maintain proper arch support.
4. Choose shoes with a wide toe box and a slightly thick insole to reduce pressure and friction on the toes.
5. Engage in foot-strengthening exercises, such as moving your toes inward to build muscle strength. Wear supportive sports shoes during outdoor activities.
6. Keep your weight within a healthy range to reduce stress on your joints.
7. Avoid wearing high heels or narrow-toed shoes for long periods, as they place excessive pressure on the front of the foot and can lead to bunion formation.
8. If you must wear high heels, limit the height to 5 cm or less and try to go barefoot at home after wearing them. Soaking your feet in warm water can help relieve fatigue.
9. Consider using orthopedic devices like bunion splints or corrective shoe inserts to provide long-term relief and help balance the foot's structure.
In summary, early treatment of hallux valgus can slow its progression and prevent complications. If left untreated, it can lead to joint damage in the knees, hips, and spine. Professor Lu reminds everyone not to ignore this condition. If you experience any foot discomfort, seek medical attention promptly to determine the best treatment plan and achieve the best possible outcome.
