Inappropriate shoes, adults are prone to foot problems

According to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on July 4th, adult foot problems are influenced by various factors, with 64% of cases attributed to wearing ill-fitting shoes. This highlights the importance of choosing footwear that supports foot health rather than just focusing on style or durability. Professor Zhang Jianzhong, head of the Foot Pediatrics Department at Beijing Tongren Hospital, emphasized that many people prioritize fashion and durability when buying shoes, often neglecting comfort and health. “The most important principle when selecting shoes is that they should fit your feet properly,” he said. “You shouldn’t rely solely on shoe size numbers because different brands can vary in fit.” Zhang also shared his personal approach: “I always try shoes on before buying them. It’s better to shop in the afternoon when your feet are slightly swollen. The right size means there should be enough space for your toes to move freely.” He added that it’s wise to check the flexibility of the shoe’s toe box by folding it. The fold should follow the natural curve of your foot to ensure proper movement while walking. Many women opt for high heels or thin-soled shoes to look elegant, but this can cause long-term damage. “Young people may recover quickly from uncomfortable shoes, but middle-aged and older individuals aren’t so lucky,” Zhang warned. “Some might suffer permanent pain after just one day of wearing tight shoes.” He recommended that older adults choose adjustable shoes, such as those with laces or buckles, and avoid overly soft soles, which don’t provide enough support. To determine your foot shape and find the right shoes, Zhang suggested a simple test: wet your feet and step onto a piece of paper. If your foot leaves a full imprint with little arch, you likely have flat feet and should look for shoes with arch support. For high arches, the imprint will show a noticeable gap on the inside, so softer insoles or air cushions would be more suitable. When it comes to sports shoes, the choice depends on the activity. Running shoes should be a half-size larger to allow for foot expansion, while tennis or badminton shoes need a bit more room in the toe area for quick movements. Basketball shoes, on the other hand, require higher uppers for better ankle support due to the jumping involved. In addition to proper footwear, there are several tips to keep your shoes in good condition. Old shoes can be repurposed into creative items instead of being thrown away. Always clean matte surfaces carefully, and use breathable, antibacterial socks to prevent odor. Even small details like the tail of sports shoes serve specific functions, and high heels can be made quieter with simple tricks. During pregnancy, it’s important to choose supportive, comfortable shoes—flat shoes may not be safe. If your shoes get moldy, proper cleaning methods can help restore them. Wearing certain types of shoes in the summer can also lead to discomfort or even harm. By making informed choices and taking care of your footwear, you can significantly reduce the risk of foot-related issues and enjoy better overall mobility and comfort.
