According to recent reports, the designer responsible for creating Queen Victoria’s linen cloth lantern-style underwear has been honored by prestigious institutions in the UK. The British Museum, the British Library, and the National Archives have jointly bestowed upon these garments the esteemed title of "designated heritage," an accolade previously reserved only for objects of significant national and global importance. This particular piece of lingerie, which once belonged to Queen Victoria, is now preserved within the Kensington Palace in West London.
The undergarment boasts a waist measurement of 50 inches (1.27 meters) and a bust circumference of 66 inches (1.67 meters). It features intricate details such as small crowns and the initials "VR" (Victoria Regina), along with laundry marks to help identify it during cleaning.
Vanessa Savage, a textile expert from Hansen's auction house, explained that these lantern-style panties are remarkably straightforward in design, hand-stitched from soft, pliable cotton. Similar to other women's undergarments from the post-Victorian era, Queen Victoria’s panties were designed with a divided crotch, where the two legs were joined together at the waist by a string.
