The Millennium Clothing Traditional Culture: The Evolution of Tang Dynasty

The clothing of women during the Tang Dynasty can be categorized into three main styles: 1) the narrow-sleeved shirt (ru) paired with long skirts; 2) Hu Fu, which refers to the clothing style influenced by Central Asian cultures; and 3) the "women in men's clothes" style, where women wore traditionally male attire. These three distinct styles represented the mainstream fashion of Tang Dynasty women, showcasing a blend of elegance, cultural exchange, and boldness. Among these, the "Hu Fu" was particularly notable as it reflected the open and cosmopolitan nature of Tang society. Today’s so-called "Tang-style" clothing is often a modern interpretation inspired by traditional Han Chinese and Manchu elements. This contemporary version blends the charm of Qing Dynasty clothing with Western tailoring techniques, giving new life to the traditional Manchu jacket. As a result, it has regained its place on the fashion stage, combining historical aesthetics with modern functionality. Modern adaptations of "Tang-style" clothing have undergone significant improvements. For example, today’s Chinese garments rarely use even sleeves, as they lack shoulder structure and do not provide the desired volume or shape. Traditional cheongsams and jackets were not tailored to emphasize the waist, which made them less flattering for modern figures. Now, many designs incorporate a more defined waistline, enhancing the curvilinear beauty of the wearer. In the past, skirts had very narrow hems, limiting movement and making walking difficult. Modern versions are much wider, allowing for greater ease of movement and comfort. Another change is seen in the design of the cardigan – traditionally high-collared, which feels too formal for today’s more relaxed style. Now, the collar is lower and more practical. The modern Han-style "Tang Dynasty" outfit includes collared robes and Qi chest skirts. These designs are based on traditional Tang-era clothing but incorporate modern fabrics and tailoring techniques. The Tangzhuang (Qi chest skirt), in particular, maintains the essence of traditional culture while adding a fashionable twist. It has become increasingly popular among women of all ages, proving that tradition can evolve without losing its identity.
