Do you recall last spring when I found myself musing over pencil skirts? After experimenting with several drafts, I'm thrilled to finally introduce the Liesl + Co. Extra-Sharp Pencil Skirt pattern that I believe you'll adore.
Take a look at this image of the skirt:

I’m particularly fond of this design because it features a side panel, which functions similarly to princess seams, allowing you to easily tailor the fit to your body. Unlike traditional pencil skirts with darts, this one uses four seams that provide flexibility for customization.

These seams are positioned close enough to the sides of the skirt that they won't disrupt bold prints, making it versatile for various fabric choices. Whether you're drawn to graphic designs or border prints, this pattern works beautifully. The side panel also opens up creative opportunities for unique styling.
Check out this example with Robert Kaufman's Sevenberry Canvas Natural Dots in Green:

The pattern offers two views—View A ends just above or at the knee, while View B extends a few inches lower, ending just below the knee. View B also includes a bias-cut side panel, providing endless possibilities for fabric experimentation.
For instance, you could cut the side panel on the bias, apply color-blocking techniques, or experiment with patterned fabrics. Imagine running a stripe vertically along the side panel or contrasting fabrics for a striking effect. Our Advisors Circle is currently working on some exciting ideas for this pattern, so stay tuned!
The pattern comes complete with an invisible zipper, which I personally find the easiest to sew, especially with our comprehensive instructions. Additionally, there’s a proper walking vent, which is surprisingly simple to sew and can either be topstitched for visibility or left unstitched for a seamless appearance.

The pattern also includes a waistband facing similar to that of our SoHo Shorts + Skirt, with detailed guidance for stabilizing the waistband to prevent stretching.
Here’s how the waistband facing turned out. I chose a contrasting fabric inside for added flair.

When it comes to fabric selection, I prefer using canvas or lightweight home-decor fabrics for their sturdier texture, which adds structure to the skirt. Twill, denim, suiting, or even faux leather can also work. For these examples, I selected fabrics from Robert Kaufman: Sevenberry Canvas Natural Dots in Green and Sevenberry Nara Homespun in Indigo. The pink and blue skirt shown on the pattern cover came from a canvas I purchased at Drygoods Design in Seattle during my book tour last year. Unfortunately, I don’t know the specific manufacturer or designer.

As you can see, the side panel looks great from every angle. Some fabrics emphasize the panel subtly, while others highlight it more prominently, giving you the freedom to decide how you want to showcase it.

Contrary to common belief, I think pencil skirts can suit almost anyone, especially when tailored to fit your body perfectly. Its sleek silhouette allows for versatility in styling—whether you dress it up with a blouse or keep it casual with a t-shirt. I love pairing it with classic heels, ankle boots, or sandals for a summery touch.
Here are some styling ideas to inspire you. A basic pencil skirt in black, cream, or a subtle tartan can create multiple looks:

Playing with fabric choices can also add excitement. Take this black-and-white windowpane check, for instance:

Of course, you can go wild with bold patterns like florals or stripes. Experimenting with stripe directions on the side panels adds another layer of creativity!

This pattern is now available in both paper and digital formats. I hope it becomes a staple in your wardrobe. There are countless ways to sew and style it, and I can’t wait to see how you personalize it. Share your creations with our Liesl + Co.
