fabric and styling inspiration for the parachute polo

Every child deserves a high-quality polo shirt. Whether it's part of a school uniform or simply a versatile piece in their wardrobe, polos are always a great choice. They're more polished than a standard T-shirt, yet still casual enough for everyday wear. Plus, they offer endless design possibilities. Here are some ideas to inspire your Parachute Polo + Sweatpants sewing project.

ParachutePolo

  1. A vibrant tropical print for summertime.
  2. A solid-colored polo is timeless, but adding a contrasting oxford blue collar would elevate the look.
  3. Awning stripes are perfect for warm weather, especially when paired with crisp white accents.
  4. Terry cloth appliqués—lobsters, perhaps? Even just the fabric texture or the lobster motif alone would work beautifully.
  5. Color blocking is always a hit, and we've got a step-by-step guide to help you master it.
  6. For an extra touch of flair, consider another color-blocked design.
  7. A printed polo is classic, but why not take it further with a contrasting collar?
  8. Stripes paired with a contrasting collar would create a sophisticated look.
  9. How about combining color blocking with stripes? It’s a bold yet stylish approach.
  10. Wide stripes on their own are fantastic, but pairing them with a butter-yellow collar adds an extra pop of color.
  11. Adding wide stripes to the hemline is a fantastic detail that adds visual interest.
  12. I absolutely adore the button detail on the collar—it adds a touch of elegance and would be a simple addition to your pattern.

Let’s not stop there! Did you know you can transform the Parachute Polo into a dress by simply adding a skirt to the bottom? You may want to shape the sides slightly and add a bit of flair at the hips, but otherwise, it’s a straightforward modification. Much of the inspiration here comes from Ralph Lauren, and as someone who once worked with Mr. Lauren, I’m proud to say he remains the undisputed master of the polo shirt. (Though I must admit, his recent ventures into oversized logos remain a mystery to me.)

  1. This skirt appears to be two pieces cut on the bias with a chevron center seam, but a circle skirt could be equally charming.
  2. The chest stripe is delightful. You could replicate this effect easily through color blocking.
  3. The full, bias-cut ruffle on a dropped waist skirt is utterly adorable. Don't forget to pair it with matching bloomers using our Tea Party Sundress or Seashore Sundress patterns!
  4. If you're feeling adventurous, a pleated version would be stunning. Knife pleats would look best with edge stitching, so this design is for those who enjoy a challenge.
  5. These tiered ruffles are incredibly cute and surprisingly easy to execute. The ruffles are separated by bands of fabric. The stripes at the dropped waist emphasize the Adidas logo, but ribbons or a ribbon grouping would add a touch of femininity.
  6. More petite ruffles—so cute, even if ruffles aren't typically your thing!
  7. Simplicity at its finest. Using piqué fabric could yield soft pleats without requiring the detailed edge stitching needed for knife pleats in option four.

Returning to the original pattern, I believe it has the potential to become a rugby shirt as well. The woven collar is ideal for this transformation, and the long sleeves already set the stage. All you need now is to decide which team to support—though I doubt I can assist you there!

And finally, many of you are resourceful enough to combine the Parachute Polo with the Lullaby Layette or the Tea Party Playsuit to create a polo romper. I recently added more ideas to our Customizing with Oliver + S Pinterest board if you'd like additional inspiration.

So where will you begin? Perhaps start with a basic polo and then add some flair later?

One last thought before I go—consider experimenting with different sleeve lengths or adding embroidery details for a personalized touch. Sewing opens up countless opportunities to express creativity, and I hope these ideas spark your imagination!
